Kendal BID has set the switch-on for Friday 27 November 2026 in Market Place, times still to be confirmed. Its listings disagree on the December market date.
Kendal’s Christmas lights switch-on is Friday 27 November 2026, in and around Market Place. That date is confirmed by Kendal BID, which runs the event, and matches the entry on the town’s own Visit Kendal listings.
Everything else is still open. Kendal BID’s own event page says only: “Join us in and around the Marketplace to celebrate the annual Christmas light switch on! Timings and more details to be confirmed.” There is no published start time, no parade route and no line-up as of 4 September 2026.

The Visit Kendal entry for the same date adds detail Kendal BID’s page does not: “Christmas Lights Switch-On, Late Night Opening & Farmers’ Market. Celebrate the start of the festive season with the Christmas lights switch-on, late night shopping, entertainment and a special farmers’ market. Presented by Kendal BID.”
If you want a sense of the shape of the evening, last year is the best guide. Kendal BID’s news post of 19 November 2025 said the town was “celebrating Christmas on the weekend of 28th to 30th November”, with the switch-on on the Friday evening, and asked shops to stay open later that night. Expect something similar, but do not plan around a time until Kendal BID publishes one.
The December date its own listings get wrong
The switch-on is not the whole of it. Kendal BID also runs a separate Kendal Christmas Celebration, described as “a proper Christmas celebration with Santa’s grotto, Christmas music, and stalls selling Christmas fare. Taking over the whole of the Marketplace.”
Two listings for that event are live, and they do not agree:
- Kendal BID’s own events calendar: Sunday 6 December 2026.
- Visit Kendal, which credits the event to Kendal BID: Saturday 5 December 2026.
Neither carries a time. We would lean towards the Sunday, because that is the organiser’s own page and because the 2025 celebration was also on a Sunday, but the honest answer is that the two published dates conflict and only Kendal BID can settle it. Traders wanting a stall are pointed to manager@kendalbid.co.uk on both listings.
Three stale switch-on pages that still rank
If you searched for this and landed somewhere confusing, this is why. Visit Kendal has never taken down its old switch-on pages, and three are still live:
- A news post from 14 November 2023 announcing the “Mountain & Sky” switch-on, a joint event with Kendal Mountain Festival, “5-8pm on Thursday 16 November 2023”, with a parade leaving Abbot Hall Park at 5.30pm and a slackliner performing overhead. That partnership does not apply in 2026: the festival ends on 22 November and the switch-on is five days later.
- A news post from 20 September 2019 which says Kendal Town Council was “unable to hold a dedicated Christmas lights switch-on event this year”. It is seven years old and reads as current.
- An event page at
/event/christmas-light-switch-on/for 16 November 2023, now flagged “This event has passed”. The live 2026 entry sits at the nearly identical/event/christmas-lights-switch-on/, one letter apart.
Kendal Town Council’s own switch-on pages, which search engines still index, now return 404. Its published events calendar carries 57 entries running to May 2027 and every single one is a committee meeting. There is no council Christmas listing at all. The event is Kendal BID’s, and Kendal BID’s pages are the ones to watch.

The Blackwell fair runs across two consecutive weekends this year, with different makers each weekend, marking the house’s 125th anniversary.
The Brewery Arts Christmas show is not a traditional pantomime. It is a 50-minute, age 3+ production from Exeter Northcott Theatre and PaddleBoat Theatre Company, with clowning, puppetry and a miniature set. Performances run at 1pm and 3.30pm on Saturday 19 December, then 11am and 2pm daily from 20 to 24 December and again on 27 and 28 December. The venue lists no relaxed, BSL or captioned performance.

Parking and getting there
No temporary traffic regulation order for the switch-on had been advertised on the Public Notice Portal when we checked the Kendal postcodes on 4 September 2026. Market Place is pedestrianised, so a full closure order may not be needed, but check nearer the date.
Parking is the thing to plan. There is no free council car park anywhere in Kendal, and a Friday evening switch-on falls inside charging hours in most of them.
