Every London journey from the town starts with a five-minute hop to Oxenholme Lake District, which is where the branch line meets the West Coast Main Line and where the Avanti West Coast expresses actually stop. Once you understand that, the timetable makes sense.

  • 06:56 to 10:14, 3 hours 18 minutes. The first through option of the day, and the slowest of the early ones because the Oxenholme wait is 25 minutes.

Straight from Oxenholme, the 06:23 reaches Euston at 09:12 in 2 hours 49 minutes and the 07:26 arrives at 10:14 in 2 hours 48 minutes, both without changing. If you can get to Oxenholme by car or taxi, that is the quickest way south.

Advance singles from Oxenholme start lower, at £83.00 on Avanti’s own tickets, because you are not paying for the connection. Book far enough ahead and the difference between an advance single and a walk-up Anytime return is more than £300, which on this route is the single biggest decision you make.

The five-minute local leg on its own is £4.00 for an Anytime Day Single or £3.70 for an Off-Peak Day Return, useful if you are meeting someone off a London train.

Season tickets, and why almost nobody buys one

Trainline prices an annual season from Kendal to London Terminals at £27,676, and from Oxenholme at £27,256. Those are real published prices, but they are not a commuter product in any meaningful sense: at three hours each way, daily London commuting from Kendal is not something people do. If you travel to London regularly from here, advance singles booked ahead are the sensible instrument, not a season ticket.

Kendal station: what is actually there

Kendal is an unstaffed halt on the Windermere branch, and it is worth knowing what that means before you turn up.

  • No ticket office. There is a ticket machine, and you can collect pre-purchased tickets there. The station is open 07:00 to 22:00, seven days a week.
  • Four parking spaces, free, with none marked as accessible. Four. If you are driving to the train, this is not the station to drive to.
  • Twelve cycle stands in the car park, unsheltered.
  • Level access from the station building, a ramp for boarding, and it is rated a Category B and Scooter Friendly station.
  • No waiting room.

Oxenholme station: the one to drive to

Oxenholme is two miles south east of Kendal town centre and is a fundamentally different proposition.

  • Two car parks, 145 spaces between them (49 and 96, with two accessible spaces), open 24 hours every day including bank holidays.
  • Parking is £12.50 a day, or £5.50 on a Saturday or a Sunday. Monthly is £166.00, three months £374.00 and an annual permit £1,200.00. The car parks use number-plate recognition, so you pay by the online portal rather than a windscreen ticket.
  • Ticket office open 05:45 to 19:00 Monday to Saturday, and 10:45 to 20:15 on Sundays, with machines in the booking hall outside those hours.
  • 94 sheltered cycle spaces with CCTV, on platforms 1 and 2.

The maths is straightforward. A day’s parking at Oxenholme costs £12.50 against £4.00 for the return train ticket from Kendal, so unless you need the car at Oxenholme, taking the branch train is both cheaper and less stressful.

If you are heading somewhere other than London

Oxenholme is on the main line between London and Glasgow, so the same platform serves Preston, Lancaster, Manchester, Birmingham, Carlisle, Edinburgh and Glasgow. Lancaster, 24 minutes from Kendal by train, is often the better change point for the north west and for Yorkshire.
