Ambleside's lights go on Saturday 21 November with a 4.30pm lantern procession, but no fireworks this year. Santa cruises are £24.45, on sale to 31 October.
Ambleside’s Christmas lights switch-on is Saturday 21 November 2026, and it is going ahead, but without the firework display that used to end the day. The volunteer committee that runs it says the night is going back to “the magical switch-on parade” because of rising costs, ageing equipment and a requirement to double its insurance cover.
The quick answer:
- Is it on this year? Yes. The committee “is pleased to confirm that our annual Christmas lights switch-on event will be going ahead this year”, after an earlier warning that the event was in jeopardy.
- Fireworks? No. “There will be no firework display” in 2026.
- When? Stalls and entertainment from noon in Market Cross; the lantern procession leaves the Gables Hotel at 4.30pm, with Father Christmas switching on the lights around the town.
- Cost? The street event is free. The two Christmas cruises from Waterhead are £24.45 a ticket plus a 61p fee, and online sales close on 31 October.
- Parking? There is none set aside. The organisers say to come by bus.
Everything here is from the organisers’ own site, amblesidechristmaslights.com, read on 14 October 2026.
Why there are no fireworks
The committee’s 2026 update follows “the previous communication regards the ongoing viability of Ambleside Christmas Lights”, published under the heading “Future of Ambleside Christmas Lights event in jeopardy amid soaring costs and funding shortfalls”. Its reasons for dropping the display, in its own words:
- “significantly rising operational costs across the board”
- “the ongoing need to repair and replace aging infrastructure”
- “mandatory requirements for us to double our insurance coverage”, which it calls “a substantial new financial burden”
“By scaling back on the fireworks, we can safeguard the core event, invest directly in essential equipment, and ensure that our town remains beautifully illuminated,” the committee says. The whole event is paid for by donations from local businesses, bucket collections on the day and fundraising through the year, and the organisers describe more than 4,000 LED bulbs that volunteers check from about August and hang in October (about the event).
If you were planning around fireworks on the evening of 21 November, the nearest confirmed display we know of is Low Wood Bay’s on 5 November; our fireworks page keeps track of the rest.
The timings for the day
The organisers’ event map and times page gives this running order:
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| All day | Children’s fun zone in the school playground on Vicarage Road |
| 10.30am | First steamer ready for boarding at Waterhead |
| 11am | First steamer leaves Waterhead Pier (the Santa cruise) |
| 12pm | Market Cross stalls open and entertainment starts |
| 1.30pm | Second steamer ready for boarding at Waterhead |
| 2pm | Second steamer leaves Waterhead Pier (the Grinch cruise) |
| 4.30pm | Lantern procession leaves the Gables Hotel |
On the day there are community stalls and live music in Market Cross, the committee’s own mulled wine and mince pie stall there (“the only official mulled wine stall in Market Cross”, with all profits going back into the lights), and a family fun zone by the school with Taylors Fun Fair, stalls and food (things to do). The organisers say extra toilets will be added and their locations “will be available soon”.
The Santa and Grinch cruises
Both sail from Waterhead Pier. Windermere Lake Cruises provides the boats; the lights committee runs the cruises.
- Morning Santa cruise, 11am, boarding from 10.30am. Santa “will be on board to talk to the children and deliver presents”.
- Afternoon Grinch cruise, 2pm, boarding from 1.30pm. The Grinch “steals” presents, the organisers’ joke for collecting optional new, unwrapped gifts for a children’s charity or hospital; every child still gets a goodie bag.
- On both: Andy the Jester with balloons and a table magician. Prams go on the front deck, and dogs are welcome.
Tickets are £24.45 plus a 61p ticket service fee for adults and for children in each age band (1 to 5, 6 to 9, 10 to 13). The booking form asks for children’s ages so that a suitable present can be picked, and sales close at 10.05am on 31 October. Concession tickets are available for carers of children with special needs through the organisers’ contact form (morning booking, afternoon booking). Our Father Christmas page compares them with the other Santa visits around Kendal.
Getting there and parking
The organisers say plainly: “We have no designated parking available. Your best bet is to use public transport.” They say buses run hourly from Kendal and from Keswick and stop in the centre of town. They name three main car parks:
- Rydal Road Car Park, 1-3 Rydal Road, LA22 9AN
- Lake Road Car Park, LA22 0DB
- Miller Bridge Town Centre Car Park, LA22 0EE
They also warn that there will be traffic wardens out on the day. Ambleside, like Kendal, has no free council car park; our parking page explains how the district’s charges work.
Road closures
No road closure order for the procession had been advertised on the Public Notice Portal for Ambleside when we checked on 14 October 2026. The only current Ambleside traffic order is a one-day utility closure of The Green and Nook Lane from 20 October (TTROW/20487), which has nothing to do with the lights. If the procession route needs a formal closure, it will appear there, and we will add it here. For everything else shut around the district, see roadworks and travel.
Other ways to support it
- Tree of Light: a real tree in Market Cross hung with wooden stars carrying memorial dedications, started after a founding member, Fiona, died. Stars can be bought online or written at the committee’s stall on the day (Tree of Light).
- £1,000 prize draw: £2 a ticket, 1,000 tickets, over-18s only, drawn once they have all sold (licence SL044948, prize draw).
What is still to come
- Toilet locations for the day, which the organisers say are coming.
- Any road closure notice for the procession.
- The music line-up for Market Cross, which has not been published.
Kendal’s own switch-on is six days later, on Friday 27 November; see our Kendal Christmas lights page. For the markets around the district, see Christmas markets near Kendal.
